Woodcutter Splitting Maul is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fragile handle I just bought this maul today. After splitting just a few rounds of oak I made one overstrike. That overstrike resulted in the handle breaking halfway down the shaft. The splitting was EASY and the weight and balance are GREAT. The price point isn’t bad either.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works well but handle will not last Maul works well but on larger diameter logs the handle will get damage. The handle can’t be easily changed. The dealer they tried once with no success.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pleasure to use Just split a small half cord mix of red oak, holly and a bit of sassafras. This splitting maul is a real pleasure to use. Minimal effort was used as most of my splitting was done simply with the weight of the tool. The ash handle grain is oriented perfectly and is long and straight grained. The head of the ax sits tight and straight. The ash handle is just the right combination of wood choice and length for this sized head as I got no vibration or shock to my hands. I've been burning wood long enough that I no longer miss what I aim at and I will NEVER go back to a fiberglass 'shock-proof' handle after wielding this beautiful tool.Only 'con' I can think of is the painted tool head but paint is easily removed. Thanks, Stihl, for another great tool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Maul, Poor handle Bought this maul from my local Ace Hardware. After it sat in my workshop for nearly 2 weeks, I finally got to use on after cutting up a red oak. Loved how easily it went through the wood. Like a knife through hot butter. After splitting about 5 rounds, I had an overstrike in the middle of the 6th round and the handle split right down the middle. I know that handles break and have broke a few during my life, but never that easily. The head of this maul is fantastic, but the handle is another question. Both Hickory and Ash handles are good, but the quality has to be there. Obviously, this particular mauls handle was over looked by quality control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a beast Just split a cord of pine with this Maul. What a huge difference between this maul and the box store product. I truly have been missing out. This maul goes through wood like butter. I didn’t have any issues with the handle as I usually hit what I’m aiming at. I can see this maul lasting a long time and is worth the price. Great job Stihl with another great product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing handle Used just a few times. Ash handle split badly on a normal strike of an oak round.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great power I bought this maul at a local lawn equipment store about two months ago. Since then I have done a lot of splitting with it and have really enjoyed the power, balance and ease of use. The weight of the maul seems to be in that sweet spot that isn't too heavy to swing all day but heavy enough to power through most any wood. I will say the ash handle is beginning to get chewed up near the head of the maul due to over-striking on a bunch of stringy, hard to split sycamore. For this reason I really wish I bought the Pro Maul with the metal protector. I do think I will buy the Pro pretty soon and use this one as a back up.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks good, feels good, loose head. Purchased from my local Stihl dealer, took home and filed a sharp edge on it (great steel!), and began busting wood. Since everything I have at the house is already split, I was picking out some of the bigger ones and just giving them another split to try it out. In about five hits, the head loosened up. The wedge isn't loose, I'm not afraid that the head will fly off, it's loose on the bottom end where bottom of the eye contacts the wood. It doesn't look like this one had the complete "interference" fit all the way on the handle. I should have questioned it in the store, but I was in a hurry and didn't think twice about grabbing a Stihl product without inspection. Lesson learned. I'm going to shoot Stihl an email and see what we can do about it. Other than that, it seems like great maul, good steel, and a pleasure to bust wood with.
